What Is a Lint-Free Cloth?

INTRODUCTION

Over the years, some tools and cleaning aids have become defined as essential in particular areas of work or household chores. From polishing your car to carpentry, electronics to photography, even laboratory work, the lint-free cloth has become an essential item. But, even though many of us use one, few of us perhaps understand what a lint-free cloth actually is. Below is a guide, revealing its makeup, types, maintenance and uses.

WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT DOES

Lint describes the small particles or fibres that are shed by a cloth during cleaning or washing. A lint-free cloth is one that doesn’t leave any unsightly bits of fluff behind when it has been used, leaving a surface pristine and shining. When cleaning electronic components or glass lenses, for example, even small bits of fibre or fluff can cause issues.

Lint-free cloths attract dust and are smooth, durable and absorbent. They have been woven tightly to avoid small pieces of fibre breaking off and being left behind. They are very absorbent, allowing them to soak up large amounts of liquid, but are also soft, to prevent any scratching of surfaces.

TYPES OF LINT-FREE CLOTHS

  1. Microfibre cloths. These are made of a synthetic material, a blend of polyester and polyamide. They have extremely fine fibres, making them efficient at absorbing liquids or attracting dust. Durable, but soft, they are ideal for cleaning surfaces without scratching.
  2. Cotton Cloths. Some cotton cloths can also be lint-free, especially when made of long-staple cotton.
  3. Professional cleaners and car dealers often use these as they are particularly absorbent and gentle on surfaces. Egyptian or Turkish cotton towels, and huck towels, used in the healthcare industry, are examples of such cloths.
  4. Cellusosic Fibre Cloths. Cellusosic fibres like rayon and cellulose are used to make cloths for use in laboratories and clean rooms. Extremely absorbent, they do not give off static, making them safe to use in settings where there is sensitive electronic equipment.

HOW ARE LINT-FREE CLOTHS USED?

  1. Electronics. Due to their softness, absorbency and scratch-free properties, they are ideal for cleaning screens, mobile phones and the like.
  2. Automotive Detailing. Lint-free cloths ensure no bits of fluff or fibre are left on the paintwork once the detailing job has ended.
  3. Cleaning Optical Equipment. Perfect for this kind of work, these cloths leave no specks on lenses and screens that may interfere with vision.
  4. Art and Woodwork. These cloths are used in the finishing process, where they ensure no small pieces of cloth are left trapped in the end product.
  5. Medical and Laboratory use. Lint-free cloths help to keep these areas sterile and free from germs.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Lint-free cloths should be washed separately from other laundry to avoid transfer of lint. Use a gentle detergent and warm water and avoid bleach or fabric softeners. Dry at low temperatures and air dry if possible. With proper care, these cloths may last for years.
